ABout the Halsey band program

Junior High School 157Q, Stephen A. Halsey, has a strong tradition of musical excellence. About 250 students in grades 6-9 participate in band each year. All students are provided school instruments, despite economic background. Sixth graders come to the Halsey band program with no instrumental experience. Advanced students are invited to join the Halsey Symphonic Band. In May 2014, the Symphonic Band was awarded a NYSSMA Major Organizations Gold Award. Advanced students may also join Jazz Band to learn more styles of music. Finally, the Halsey Bucket Drumming Ensemble is a modern percussion ensemble.

Band Director Sarah Wolff enthusiastically joined Halsey Junior High School's faculty in the fall of 2014. Prior to working at Halsey, Ms. Wolff was the middle and high school band director at NEST+m, a k-12 public gifted and talented school in Manhattan. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude, degree from Northwestern University and a Masters of Music and Music Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Ms. Wolff currently performs as a saxophonist with the Brooklyn Wind Symphony.

Halsey has generously received grants from VH1 Save the Music Foundation and Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. Are you interested in helping Halsey's band students achieve musical excellence? Great!! Kindly visit our "How to help" page.
